About our shops

Our chain of 24 shops raised over £700,000 in the year ended 31 March 2009, all of which will be used to help fund the work of St. Margaret’s.

Sherborne Shop

Each shop is professionally managed, and over 500 volunteers work with the managers, carrying out a wide range of duties.

Over the past three years, all of the shops have been refurbished, and new shops have opened in Wiveliscombe (2007), Martock (2008), Sherborne (2008), Wincanton (2009), and Yeovil (2009). Also, in December 2009, our furniture business in Taunton town centre was relocated to Bridge Street, where it now occupies a prominent site opposite our existing clothing outlet. Total annual turnover is in excess of £2 millions, and our profit last year was an all time record.

Virtually every item sold in the shops is donated, and we are always in need of good quality items of clothing, books, china and glass, jewellery and furniture. We offer a free furniture collection service, and we deliver furniture to customers’ homes for a small charge.

Gift Aid ItWe are now able to reclaim gift aid on proceeds from the sale of donated goods, which increases our income by 28p for every £1 of sales of gift aided items. The gift aid scheme was introduced during the summer of 2008, and almost 6,000 donors have already signed up. In the year ended 31 March 2009, we raised an extra £75,000 retail income through the gift aid scheme.

Many donated items are now being offered for sale ebay logothrough St. Margaret’s eBay Store. Since it was set up in 2008, this is proving highly successful with goods regularly being dispatched to destinations worldwide. Our Volunteers

The shops could not operate without the contribution made by our team of over 500 willing volunteers. Hours are arranged to suit individual circumstances, and volunteers are involved in a broad range of duties, including sorting donated goods, merchandising, and serving customers. Many volunteers bring valuable personal experience such as product knowledge or IT skills, but others just bring enthusiasm, and the wish to support the remarkable work carried out in our two hospices, and throughout the communities served by St. Margaret’s. Whatever the background, all are welcome.

We always need more volunteers. If you would like to help and can spare just a few hours each week, please get in touch with the manager of your local shop or contact our retail office at 10 -12 Bridge Street Taunton, TA1 1UD. Telephone:01823 353781 Email : sekerber@st-marg-hospice.org

Other Services

Because our shops are located in most of the communities served by St. Margaret’s, they are also able to provide a local point of contact with the hospice. Shops always display details of forthcoming fundraising events, and can accept St. Margaret’s Lottery subscription renewals.

Details of the wide variety of services offered by St. Margaret’s are also available in all shops, and our managers and deputy managers will always do their best to answer queries, or give contact details where more complex information is needed.
