An Introduction to Communication Siills in Palliative Care

This basic level course provides an introduction to the essential components of communication and is designed to improve skills and confidence in communicating with patients, their families and other staff.

Outcomes: By the end of this study day the student will be able to:

  • Analyse the components of verbal and non verbal communication in order to develop an appropriate response when communicating in practice.
  • Be aware of the impact of body language on commonication
  • Explore the concept of empathy and discuss ways in which it can be applied to develop good communication and therapeutic relationships in practice.
  • Demonstrate ways in which listening skills can be used effectively to promote good communication in practice.
  • Explore ways of managing difficult questions and conversations that will enhance confidence in communicating in practice.
  • Demonstrate ways in which to enhance communication for those with physical or mental impairment.
