Outcomes:

At the end of these study days the student will be able to:

• analyse the role of the HCA in palliative care, identify areas beyond their remit and understand how to safely refer to the appropriate professional in practice
• describe the concept, principles and the goals of palliative care nursing
• know and understand the assessment of patient and carer’s total needs in palliative care and make an appropriate contribution to the planning of care
• identify patient need and inform the nursing or multidisciplinary team in an appropriate and timely way to ensure patient safety and care
• monitor and evaluate patient care reporting to the relevant professional
• understand and discuss the impact of life limiting illness on patients and their carers and demonstrate ways of appropriate nursing support
