Symptom Control for HCAs
A two-day course that will enable the HCA to develop and improve their understanding of Symptom Control for palliative care patients.

Outcomes:
At the end of these study days the student will be able to:
- analyse the role of the HCA in palliative care, identify areas beyond their remit and understand how to safely refer to the appropriate professional in practice
- describe the concept, principles and the goals of palliative care nursing
- know and understand the assessment of patient and carer’s total needs in palliative care and make an appropriate contribution to the planning of care
- identify patient need and inform the nursing or multidisciplinary team in an appropriate and timely way to ensure patient safety and care
- monitor and evaluate patient care reporting to the relevant professional
- understand and discuss the impact of life limiting illness on patients and their carers and demonstrate ways of appropriate nursing support
As a special concession, study day fees are waived for NHS staff working in Somerset
