St. Margaret’s Hospice has a ho-ho-host of fun ways to do your bit to ensure people facing a life-limiting illness receive the care they need this festive season.

The charity is urging people across Somerset to help pay for Christmas Day at their local hospice, whether by joining yuletide fun runs in Bridgwater and Yeovil or taking part in some easy fundraising activities at home, school or work.

Its festive appeal aims to raise £26,000 to pay for a whole day of care across the county - including for patients who will be spending Christmas at the St. Margaret’s Hospice In-patient Units in Taunton and Yeovil, as well as those who will receive a home visit from the hospice’s community nursing team.

There are a variety of easy and fun ways to support the appeal:

  • Claim your free Great Somerset Turkey Sweepstake kit and encourage your colleagues to play. If you raise £100, the winner of your sweepstake will receive a £20 voucher for Christmas turkey or meats from Pyne’s of Somerset.

  • Get dressed up and join the St. Margaret’s Hospice Festive Fun Run in Bridgwater or Santa Dash in Yeovil on Sunday, December 9.

  • Save money on Christmas cards - and donate to St. Margaret’s Hospice instead - by using the charity’s Easy Christmas Card to share messages with your friends and colleagues.
  • Hold a Jolly Jumper Day at your school or workplace.

  • Put on a Christmas mince pie and cake sale.

Marisa Lovell-Fox, Head of Fundraising at St. Margaret’s Hospice, said: “Christmas is a time for fun and laughter with friends and family, but when someone in your family is facing a life-limiting illness it can feel very different.

“Whether patients are receiving care and support at home or in our In-patient Units, with your help our staff and volunteers will be working hard this Christmas to ensure everyone is able to make precious memories to treasure for years to come.”

Meanwhile, Light up a Life services are taking place at churches and other venues around the county until Wednesday 12 December. The services are an opportunity to pay tribute to cherished family members or friends and to light a candle in their memory.

People are invited to commemorate someone special by including their name in the Book of Remembrance, which will be presented at the church services before going on display in the Taunton and Yeovil hospices in 2019.

At any time, St. Margaret’s Hospice is supporting an average of 260 patients across Somerset – the vast majority in their own homes. After NHS funding, the charity needs to raise over £9.5m a year to fund its end of life care services.
