Join Somerset's answer to the Tour de France Over the next three weeks, competitors in the Tour de France will cover more than 2,000 miles, tackling some of the toughest mountain climbs in Europe. If you’re inspired by their superhuman feats but would like a more realistic challenge closer to home, the Great Somerset Cycle could be just the thing for you. On Sunday 5 August, riders will pedal the 38 miles between St. Margaret’s Hospice’s In-patient Units in Taunton and Yeovil – a piece of cake for Chris Froome and co but the perfect test for most cyclists. Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship, with a suggested target of £150. All the money raised will help St. Margaret’s Hospice to care for people across Somerset who are affected by life-limiting illnesses. The charity, which last year supported more than 3,800 people in Somerset, needs to raise over £9.5m a year to fund its end of life care services. More than 200 people took part in the first Great Somerset Cycle last year. Cyclists can choose between a 38-mile ride from hospice to hospice, or a 76-mile round trip. The grand départ will see riders setting off from both Yeovil and Taunton at 9am. Sonia Bateman, events fundraiser at St. Margaret’s Hospice, said: “The countryside between our In-patient Units in Taunton and Yeovil makes a beautiful route for cycling. “The Great Somerset Cycle isn’t a race – it’s open to riders of all abilities and there is wonderful camaraderie among the St. Margaret’s peloton. “With a month to train for it and the Tour de France on TV to inspire you, now is the perfect time to sign up to ride your bike and raise money so that people in Somerset affected by life-limiting illnesses get the care they deserve.” The Great Somerset Cycle 2018 is proudly sponsored by Clarke Willmott solicitors and the Bicycle Chain, who will also be providing mechanical support to riders on the day. Kate Gardner, partner and head of Clarke Willmott’s Taunton office, said: “We are extremely pleased to be supporting St. Margaret’s Hospice and the Great Somerset Cycle. The charity does a great deal of work for the people within our local community and their families, and we want to show how grateful we are to both their workers and volunteers. “Members of our staff took part in the cycle ride last year and because we enjoyed it so much, we have decided to be joint sponsors this year.” For more information or to book your place, visit www.st-margarets-hospice.org.uk/the-great-somerset-cycle2018 or call 0845 345 9671.
