How We're Inspected

The Care Quality Commisions (CQC)

The CQC is the independent regulator of all health and social care services in England. Their role is to monitor, inspect and regulate services in care establishments across the country to make sure they meet the fundamental standards of safe, effective and high-quality care.

Following an unannounced CQC inspection in December 2015, our Taunton-based hospice was awarded an outstanding rating. We achieved ‘outstanding’ in four of the five domains, meaning that we are the first the country to achieve this.

We found that St Margaret’s Hospice - Taunton was providing an outstanding service to the people it supported and to their families. The team there should be extremely proud of the work they do.

We know how challenging yet, rewarding it is to work in such a service, and we were struck by the extent to which the hospice places the people at the heart of everything it does. More than anything else, the way in which the staff team are led to think of each person as a unique individual and respond accordingly, is why this hospice has received the highest rating we can give.

Deborah Ivanova, Interim Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care

Monitor

Monitor is the sector regulator for health services in England. Their job is to make the health sector work better for patients.

St Margaret’s Hospice provides critical commissioner based services to the CCG and as such comes under Monitor’s regulatory scrutiny.

Monitor requires the Trustees to certify and make publically available:

  1. That our Trustee Board are satisfied that St. Margaret’s Hospice has the ‘required resources’ to run the organisation for the next 12 months, and
  2. That St Margaret’s Hospice has effective systems and processes in place that identifies risks, and guards against their occurrence.

At the Trustee Board meeting on 18 June 2015, Trustees agreed that the hospice meets both of these requirements and the Chair of the Board (at that time), David Jenkins, duly signed both certificates to this effect.
